It is capable of establishing direct links between computers that are behind network address translation firewalls without requiring reconfiguration; in other words, it establishes a connection over the Internet that emulates the connection that would exist if the computers were connected over a local area network. Hamachi was acquired from Pankratov by LogMeIn in 2009. It is currently available as a prod. Hamachi is a free, virtual private network (VPN) that makes it insanely easy to set up secure connections between computers across the internet. That may sound really complicated, but basically it. Go to control panell - choose network connection or sharing centre - click on hamachi network connection right mouse and choose 'disable'. After few min do it again only this time choose 'enable'. A quick guide on how to make a site-to-site VPN using LogMeIn Hamachi as I found it hard to work out and the current support is rubbish.

12 Steps total

Step 1: If using VMware / Hyper-V

To start with I have been told that at the moment it will not work with Hyper-V as it does not support promiscuous mode.

On VMware you have to enable promiscuous mode to do this follow the VMWare KB http://oots.be/1zm

Step 2: Pick two reliable machines to be your gateways

You need to find two machines to become your 'gateway' machines, make sure you pick reliable ones ideally you want a Server OS that is a domain member.

It wont work right on a workstation / its advised not to put it on a workstation for this kind of setup.

Step 3: Setup a new network in LogMeIn

In the LogMeIn central console goto networks, new network and provide it with a name.

The network type needs to be a mesh to allow two-way communication.

The next couple of steps allow you to set how machines are able to join the network and if they need a password.

If you have already installed the Hamachi client on the machines you can select them at the third stage if not goto the next step.

Step 4: Install the client

Login to the LogMeIn central control panel on the two machines you want to become the gateways/clients.

Goto networks, my networks, Add Client at the top.

The install is really quick and easy and will setup the networking ready so be aware a small loss of connectivity is possible.

Step 5: Add the clients to the networks

I found the easy way to do this was in the LogMeIn central control panel.

You can either goto my clients find the client and assign it to a network or goto my networks edit the network and add / remove members.

Step 6: Once both machines are on the network

They should show up on each others client like the picture -->

Step 7: Now come the tricky bits...

Step 8: Enable Forwarding in Hamachi

They havn't made a GUI for this yet :-/ seems weird to me...

* Open the Service Configuration folder (System > Preferences > Settings > Advanced Settings, at the bottom)
* Stop the Hamachi 2.0 Tunneling Engine, this has to be done in the windows services msc
* Open the h2-engine.cfg file which is in the Service Configuration folder you just opened, and scroll to the bottom for this entry....

and change it in

* Start the Hamachi 2.0 Tunneling Engine.

Step 9: Configuring Windows for IP Routing

Now we have to allow / tell Windows to do IP routing between the networks.

* Open the registry editor (start, run, regedit, ok)
* Navigate to HKEY_Local_MachineSystemCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParameters
* Look for the key IPEnableRouter and set it to 1

You now need to restart your machine to enable this, when restarted you can check it by looking at ipconfig /all and checking for IP Routing = Enable

Step 10: Set the static routing between the networks

You now need to add a route onto both machines to tell them how to access the other network.

On machine 1
route –p add **NETWORK_MACHINE2_IS_ON** mask 255.255.255.0 **IP_OF_MACHINE2s_HAMACHI_CLIENT** /p

On machine 2
route –p add **NETWORK_MACHINE1_IS_ON** mask 255.255.255.0 **IP_OF_MACHINE1s_HAMACHI_CLIENT** /p

The IP of the hamachi clients in the hamachi client, normally it starts with 5.x.x.x

Step 11: Test it

Try to ping from one machine to the other and hope it works :-)

Step 12: Add it onto your routers

I then added a static route on my routers to say for the remote network goto the local machine with hamachi installed on and off it went.

Hope this helps someone get a Site-to-Site VPN setup.

    Will other users who does not have hamachi also connect through the vpn to the other site?

    Works for me quite good up to point 7.
    No need for fix routes but maybe the day comes when I need it. Thanks for posting

    Does this still work after the recent hamachi updates? I've gone through this and double checked multiple times and can not ping across the vpn to machines. Using two Windows 7 machines.

    Thanks a lot akp982, really helpful. I'm having the problem tho that from the hamachi machines (gateways) I cant ping to the inside network but from other machines on both networks I can ping fine.

    But I could not make machines from network1 ping machines from network2 . Could You send me what was the static route that you created on the routers? Sorry about my poor english. Regards
